RARE NORTHERN SHENANDOAH VALLEY OF VIRGINIA FEDERAL INLAID WALNUT BLOCK-FRONT BUREAU, the conforming top fitted with a dovetailed gallery featuring cut-outs mimicking the bureau front, above four graduated cock-beaded drawers flanked by reeded pilasters and chamfered corners, and a cut-out skirt having a band of diagonal inlay, raised on flaring French feet retaining extensive blocking underneath. Pine and poplar secondary woods. Retaining an old refinished surface with warm color. Possibly Western Maryland or the region around Martinsburg and Shepherdstown, Virginia (now West Virginia). Late 18th/early 19th century. 40" H (top), 40" WOA, 25 1/2" DOA.
Catalogue Note: The MESDA accession file comments, "Although furniture scholars often consider blocked furniture an exclusive product of the North, this exceptional chest of drawers is one of a group made in the northern Shenandoah Valley. Another example constructed by the same artisan is exhibited in the collection of the Henry Francis duPont Winterthur Museum."

  • Condition:

    Fine overall condition, shrinkage crack to top and each end, top with stains and small filled holes at edges, other minor repairs. Gallery possibly a later addition.
