This set of four late Victorian-era butter or tea knives features sterling silver handles and steel blades. The handles are decorated in the Lily of the Valley pattern by the Whiting Manufacturing Company, which is characterized by relief-molded floral sprays and foliage. Each handle features an engraved script monogram of the letter G. The side of each handle is stamped with the hallmark for the Whiting Manufacturing Company, consisting of a lion passant within a shield, followed by the word STERLING. The steel blades are designed with blunt, rounded tips. The front of each blade is stamped with the royal cipher V R beneath a crown for Victoria Regina, along with the maker's mark JOSEPH RODGERS & SONS and the designation CUTLERS TO HER MAJESTY. The firm's registered trademarks, a six-pointed star and a Maltese cross, are also present on the blade. The reverse side of the blades is stamped ENGLAND, indicating they were produced for the export market after 1890.
