Peter Max (American, b. Germany 1937). "Love" color lithograph, 1969. Hand-signed and dated at lower right and center. A radiant emblem of the late 1960s, "Love" captures Peter Max at the height of his psychedelic Pop Art vision, where color becomes both atmosphere and declaration. The composition spells out the word LOVE in bold, undulating blue forms set against a luminous gradient field shifting from warm pink to golden yellow and cool green, while a stylized female profile blooms upward like a living flower from the letterforms themselves. The palette vibrates with the saturated intensity that made Max one of the defining visual voices of the era, merging graphic clarity with cosmic optimism. Created in 1969, at the crest of the counterculture movement, this lithograph reflects Max's fascination with peace, unity, and universal harmony - themes that permeated his posters, album covers, and mass circulated prints. About the artist: Born in Berlin, Peter Max moved frequently with his family, living in more than six countries until they settled in the United States. Max studied in New York City at the Art Students League, the Pratt Institute, and the School of Visual Art. Max has been revered as a visionary Pop Artist since the 1960's, beloved for his "Cosmic '60s" style which would later evolve to Neo Expressionism. Max developed a bold style of painting using striking Fauvist colors and intriguing themes. As he evolved from Pop to Neo-Expressionism, his work became more painterly and sensuous. Max's unique symbolism and vibrant color palette have continued to inspire new generations of Americans throughout the decades.

  • Condition: Good. Mounted behind glass in custom frame; has not been examined outside of glass. Small areas of loss in each corner and two miniscule areas of loss in lower area. Some creasing and wrinkles in areas as well as minor areas of staining. A few tiny scuffs to frame. Otherwise, poster and frame are both in nice condition with vibrant pigments. Hand-signed and dated at lower right and center. Suspension wire on verso for display.
