EARLY TEXAS LAND GRANTS (3)
Three land grants, includes: PETER H. BELL (1812-1898) American soldier known for his role during the battle of Buena Vista and later the governor of Texas from 1849-1853, and Member of Congress, serving from 1853-1857. Partly-printed D.S. 1p. folio, Austin, July 25, 1848, a grant of ‘one league of land' in Milam District. Engrossment and signature are light, prominent folds with toning thereat, still good. WITH: JOHN IRELAND (1827 - 1896) 18th Governor of Texas, served as a colonel in the Confederate Army, later elected to the Texas House, and briefly sat on the Texas Supreme Court before being elected the eighteenth governor of Texas. Partly-printed D.S. 1p. folio, Austin, July 26, 1883, a grant of 160 acres in Kimble County. Folds, very good. Together with: GEORGE T. WOOD (1795 – 1858) American military officer and politician who served as the 2nd Governor of Texas. He represented Liberty County during the convention which wrote the state constitution and was elected to the Texas Senate following Texas' admission to the United States. When the Mexican–American War began, he resigned his senate seat and became Colonel of the 2nd Regiment Texas Mounted Volunteers. Partly-printed D.S. 1p. folio, Austin, June 14, 1848, a grant of 1,280 acres in the Gonzalez District. Toned folds with a few pinholes at intersections, engrossment a bit light and evenly toned throughout. Three pieces.
