Eastern Africa, Ethiopia, ca. millions of years ago; North America, United States, Montana, Hell Creek Formation, Late Cretaceous, ca. 100 to 66 million years ago; Missouri, Pennsylvanian, ca. 323 million years ago. This group of three specimens includes fern fronds of Odontopteris brardii preserved in Bonner Springs Shale from Platte County, Missouri, representing Carboniferous coal forest flora. A theropod dinosaur tooth from the Hell Creek Formation, identified as Nanotyrannus, and a polished chocolate opal with warm iridescent rainbow hues and remnants of the original matrix along the edges. Size of fern: 8.2" L x 5.5" W (20.8 cm L x 14.0 cm W)

  • Condition: Chips, fissures, and scratches to the polished opal. Fern matrix is thin and fragile along the edges, and actively flakes when handled. Tooth enamel is completely worn away, with losses to root and remaining layers.
