CONFEDERATE GENERALS LEROY A. STAFFORD, JUBAL A. EARLY AND RICHARD S. EWELL
A fine group of signatures and endorsements on a war-date manuscript D.S., 1p. 8vo., [n.p.], July 10, 1862, from Lt. Col. ALEXANDER S. PENDLETON (1840-1864), assistant adjutant general to ‘Stonewall' Jackson, to Maj. Gen. RICHARD S. EWELL (1817-1872), a ‘special order' directing Ewell to assemble a detail of officers and men for guard duty. Pendleton signs in black ink at the conclusion. The verso first bears the endorsing signature of Maj. Gen. JUBAL A. EARLY (1819-1894) in black ink, adding his contemporary rank ‘Brig Genl'. Below this appears the pencil endorsement of A.A.G. William Carvel Hall, followed by the very rare signed endorsement in pencil of Brig. Gen. LEROY A. STAFFORD (1822-1864), who led the 9th Louisiana Infantry throughout the war and was killed in action at the Battle of the Wilderness when a minie ball pierced his spine. He writes, ‘Received the within orders, but do not know where to send the detail, for the want of a guide', and signs ‘L. A. Stafford', adding his contemporary rank ‘Col Comdg 8th Inf Brigade'. Beside this appears an autograph endorsement executed by Ewell, ‘Col. Stafford, comd'g 8th Brig, will make the within detail', signing indistinctly, possibly ‘Maj G'. Shows original mailing folds and a few spots of soiling, otherwise in very good overall condition.
