Historic Factory Presentation Engraved and Gold Washed Walther PP Semi-Automatic Pistol Inscribed as a 1934 Christmas Gift to German Party Labor Leader Karl Schmuckle, with Ivory Grips and Presentation Case Offered here is a stunning factory gold washed presentation engraved Walther PP pistol with the fancy oval bordered engraved personalized monogram initials "KSch" of Karl Schmuckle on the rear of the frame, and a gold washed plaque affixed to the left of the grip inscribed as a 1934 gift to their National Labor Service Commander Karl Schmuckle at a Christmas Party in Zella-Melis from the men of Labor Detachment 3 of the 233rd National Labor Service Group located in the city of Suhl. The plaque inscription was executed by a Walther engraver and reads in five-lines: "Jhrem/Gauarbeitsfuhrer/die Abtlg. 3/233/Zella-Mehlis/Weihnachten 1934" which translates to "To their / District Labor Leader/ Labor Detachment 3/233/ Zella-Mehlis/Christmas 1934". The event at which this pistol was presented is mentioned in a German newspaper excerpt from the December 23, 1934, issue of the Zella-Mehliser Tageblattes indicating the Christmas celebration of the Zella-Mehlis Freewilligen Arbeitsdeinst (Voluntary Labor Service) took place a day prior on December 22, 1934, and an appearance was made by Gauarbeitsfuhrer and Staatsrat (State Representative) Karl Schmuckle. The celebration was initiated at 6:30 by the Winter Solstice Celebration on the Lerchenberg (hill) in the center of the town where a World War I monument was under construction. After this, the columns marched to the barracks where in the festively decorated halls the program arranged under the theme "Germany's Battle for the Saar" was delivered in an impressive manner. The celebration was attended by a number of party and city leaders, "champions of labor" from the cities of Zella-Mehlis, Oberhof, Suhl, forestry departments, police and the Winterhilfswerk (WHW). The celebration was concluded at 8:30. The Christmas event in Zella-Mehlis was held in conjunction with the Third Reich push for a Plebiscite in the Saar region that was stripped from Germany by the Treaty of Versailles. At this Christmas celebration on December 22, 1934, members of the labor unit 3/233 presented their leader Karl Schmuckle with this highly embellished Walther PP. German born Karl Schmuckle (May 15, 1895-April 3, 1970) was sent to non-commissioned officer school in 1910, and in 1914 at the outbreak of World War I he joined infantry regiment 121 of Alt-Wurtemberg and fought in France. From 1915 continuing throughout the war Schmuckle was a fighter pilot. By the end of World War I he scored a number of victories with Jasta 21 and Jasta 15 ("Hunting groups" comprised of approximately 12 fighter aircraft each) and was awarded the Iron Cross and a handful of medals as well as an honorary cup for combat in the air. Between 1925-1932 he served with the Thuringen Schutzpolizei (Protective Police). In early 1930, he joined the National Socialist German Workers Party (NSDAP). He was the founder of the Polizeifachschaften (Police Specialist Units). From September 1932 he headed a labor camp at the elbow in the Rhon. In 1933, he became an official as the Gauarbeitsfuhrer (District Labor Leader) of Thuringia Labor District 23 and as Landeskommissar (State Commissioner) for the Freewilligen Arbeitsdeinst in Thuringen, shortly thereafter receiving an appointment as a State Representative of Thuringen and in 1935 was named Generalarbeitsfuhrer (General Labor Leader). From 1936 until the end of World War II in Spring 1945 Schmuckle was acting deputy in the Reichstag and represented the constituency of Thuringia. Following the German attack in the west in 1940, Schmuckle served as a senior RAD leader at Air District Command 12, responsible for western France. Karl Schmuckle was last promoted to Obergeneralarbeitsfuhrer (Senior General Labor Leader) on Hitler's last birthday on April 20, 1945, ten days prior to Hitler's death. In the final days of the European Theater in World War II on May 8, 1945, American troops liberated the Austrian town of Mittersill and female prisoners above the town at the Mittersill Castle, and captured Karl Schmuckle under the automatic arrest clause, which is when this presentation pistol was likely seized and brought back stateside as a prized war trophy. The region where Schmuckle was captured saw intense activity, including the nearby Battle of Castle Itter on May 5, 1945, where U.S. soldiers, Wehrmacht defectors, and French prisoners fought together against the Waffen SS troops. After Schmuckle was released in 1947, he lived out his days as a merchant in southern Germany. The pistol was factory gold washed above nickel plating and beautifully factory engraved in the style referred to as "ornamental" or "rosette" pattern with nearly full coverage consisting of vine and leaf patterns on shaded backgrounds, with relief engraved floral designs in an oval at the upper left side of the slide, border patterns, the noted monogram initials, and floral designs on the flat base plate of the gold washed magazine. The engraving shows a meticulous level of detail and is spectacular in its layout. This pistol was certainly engraved by a senior Walther Master Engraver. The “ornamental” pattern factory engraving seen on this pistol offered shows some similarities to other factory presentation examples seen in "Walther Volume II: Engraved, Presentation and Standard Models" by James Rankin, notably the Walther PPK pictured on page 41, and another PPK on page 60 that has an engraved date "19.6.34" and similarly engraved monogram initials. The pistol has the Walther banner, address, patent, caliber, and model nomenclature on the left side of the slide with 90-degree safety, "crown/N" proofs on the barrel and slide, the serial number "814757" on the right of the frame, and is wearing a set of ivory grips with the presentation plaque affixed on the left grip secured with an interior screw. The pistol is accompanied with a factory red leather wrapped presentation display case with fitted white satin interior containing the pistol, an extra gold washed magazine with finger extension base, and cleaning rod. Also includes a binder containing various research related documentation, and some period photographs of Karl Schmuckle.
