WILLIAM PINKNEY
(1764 - 1822) American statesman, a commissioner negotiating Jay's Treaty, Madison's Attorney General and Ambassador to Russia. Bold signature ‘Wm Pinkney' on an irregular 7 x 3 in. slip of paper cut from a larger letter, including sentiment and address to James Madison, with a further seven lines in Pinkney's hand on the verso. Shows folds, toned, with some ink show-through and insect damage to the left edge, otherwise in very good condition. SOLD WITH: WILLIAM PINKNEY WHYTE (1824-1908), Pinkney's grandson, U.S. senator and 35th governor of Maryland. Pair of A.L.S.'s, both to a Rev. Charles C. Pierce, the first enclosing the above signature of William Pinkney and stating he is unable to locate signatures of the other members of Madison's cabinet, the second reiterating the above information and stating that the elder Pinkney's papers are scattered amongst family. Both show insect damage, folds, and toning, else very good. Three pieces.
