Highly Desirable Freund & Bro. Marked Sharps Model 1874 Single Shot Rifle The Sharps was the long range rifle of choice for men seeking adventure in the American West in the 19th century thanks to its well-earned reputation for long range accuracy and firepower and were particularly popular with buffalo hunters. German immigrant gunsmiths Frank W. and George Freund setup temporary gun shops along the route of the Union Pacific Railroad as it worked its way west in the 1860s and then more permanent shops in Cheyenne, Wyoming, and Denver, Colorado, in 1867-1886 and 1870-1875 respectively. In addition to retailing and repairing various firearms, Freund & Bro. specialized in Sharps rifles and also developed improvements which proved popular. This c. 1876 rifle is equipped with a blade front sight on a raised dovetailed base, a Lawrence patent rear sight with the ladder removed, and double set triggers. The barrel is marked with the Bridgeport barrel address ahead of the rear sight and "FREUND & BRO" and "CALIBRE 40" on top of the breech and "70." on the right flat. Matching serial numbers are on the bottom of the barrel and the upper tang. The Sharps patent marking is on the left side of the frame. It is equipped with double set triggers, an uncapped forearm, and a straight stock with a steel buttplate.
