Factory Engraved Goolamhusain Allibhoy & Sons Ltd. Retailed English Grand Prix Long Range Model P Dangerous Game Double Rifle in .450-400 Nitro Express Manufactured in England around the turn of the 20th century, this rifle made its way to Bombay, India, to the shop of Goolamhusain Allibhoy & Sons Ltd. From there, it was purchased by a gentleman who was clearly quite a serious hunter, and likely used to hunt all manner of game in India, from tiger to elephant. If this rifle could talk, oh the stories it could tell, of a wild India sparsely settled by Europeans in the days of legendary hunters like Jim Corbett, who used a similar .450-400 N.E. double rifle (his by W. J. Jeffery), to hunt the man-eaters of Kanda and Mohan, exploits he details in his famous book "Man-Eaters of Kumaon". This rifle was built with black steel chopperlump barrels featuring a beaded blade fore sight with flip-up moon bead on the ramp base, five-leaf (one standing, four folding) rear sight on the quarter rib, Goolamhusain Allibhoy & Sons Ltd. marking and "GRAND PRIX LONG RANGE RIFLE MODEL P" on the right tube, mostly obscured load information on the left tube (3 1/4 inch case), sling swivel, period Birmingham proof marks on the flats, and chambers with ejectors. The barrels are fitted to the blacked action which displays scroll engraving surrounding "MADE IN ENGLAND" on either side as well as a tiger on the left, a hound and stag on the underside, and an elephant on the right. The rifle features bushed firing pins, a Greener crossbolt, double triggers, and a tang mounted automatic safety. The rifle is fitted with an attractively figured and multi-point checkered splinter forend with engraved iron and Anson release as well as a pistol grip stock with bolstered flats, engraved blacked grip cap, shadowline cheekpiece, rear sling swivel, blank stock oval, and a Decelerator recoil pad. Length of pull 14 5/8 inches. Weight 10 lbs. 13 oz.

  • Condition: Very good, showing the signs of a well-loved and hard used hunting rifle in the harsh environment of colonial India. The barrels are mostly grey and show worn markings and pitting, indicative of use in the tropics. The wood is refurbished and shows light handling evidence, a tiny hairline crack at the upper tang, and crisp checkering. Barrels loose on face; otherwise, mechanically functions. A fantastic opportunity to own a rifle that has really "been there and done that"!
