JOHN R. CHAMBLISS, JR.
(1833-1864) Confederate brigadier general of cavalry who served with distinction under Robert E. Lee and J.E.B. Stuart, as well as the Battle of Gettysburg by commanding Rooney Lee's brigade. Killed in action during the Second Battle of Deep Bottom. Very rare war-date L.S., 2pp. 8vo., ‘Near Norfolk', Sep. 11, 1861, a recommendation for a doctor serving as a hospital steward to be appointed assistant surgeon in his regiment. In part: ‘We the undersigned take great pleasure in bringing to your notice Dr. B. B. Hunter, who is a graduate of the University of Virginia. We know him very well – he is a man of admirable moral attainments; and has proved himself to be scientific and highly qualified for the practice of medicine – he has been acting as Hospital Steward for the Regiment for some time, and by this means we have been enabled to become well acquainted with him in a civil as well as a professional point of view…' He signs ‘Jno. R. Chambliss' in black ink at the conclusion, adding his contemporary rank ‘Col. 41st Infantry Regt', with his lieutenant colonel, surgeon and assistant surgeon countersigning. Shows original mailing folds, otherwise in fine condition.
