Highly Desirable Documented North-West Mounted Police Marked Winchester Model 1876 Lever Action Saddle Ring Carbine Manufactured in 1882, this is a highly desirable example of a North-West Mounted Police issued Winchester Model 1876 saddle ring carbine. This particular carbine was part of a second batch of Winchester Model 1876 carbines purchased by Canada's North-West Mounted Police (N.W.M.P.) Formally established in 1873 in part in response to the uprising in the Red River Colony and later the Cypress Hills Massacre, the N.W.M.P. were a mobile and elite police force of around 300 men, quite similar to the early iterations of the famed Texas Rangers in the south. This small force was tasked with covering an area of approximately 118,610,000 acres, leaving troopers often isolated or heavily outnumbered in harsh and hostile territory, necessitating the significant firepower the Model 1876 provided. According to Phillips and Klancher in "Arms & Accoutrements of the Mounted Police", a total of 1,611 Model 1876 carbines were ordered for the N.W.M.P.; however, 500 of these were rerouted to the Department of Militia, with only 150 of those eventually making their way to the Mounted Police for a total of 1,211. Given the years of hard use in the extremely harsh environment that these carbines saw in the saddle with troopers of the N.W.M.P., many did not survive, leaving them considerably rare on today's collectors market in any condition. The carbine itself is listed by serial number in the previously mentioned book as having been issued to the N.W.M.P. It has the Second Model receiver with the dust cover guide retained by two screws and dust cover with grip serrations at the rear. The top of the barrel is marked with the two-line address and King's patent marking as well as the caliber marking at the breech. The upper tang has the model marking, while the lower tang is marked with the serial number. The caliber marking is repeated on the bottom of the cartridge elevator. It is fitted with a block blade front sight and the second pattern "Spanish meter" folding ladder rear sight as well as a saddle ring on the left of the receiver. It is mounted with a smooth forearm and straight grip stock with a carbine buttplate. The right side of the stock has the typical "N.W.M.P." marking in an arched banner over a branded "37", while the bottom of the stock just behind the lower tang is stamped "APP 37" for the Alberta Provincial Police.

  • Condition: Good showing the character of a working gun of the frontier of the North-West Territory, showing mostly grey patina with some speckled brown, a few scattered patches of light pitting and some scattered light dings. The well-worn wood shows the scars of a working light with a minor crack in the wrist, a hairline crack in the forearm, and minor dings. The cartridge elevator needs work; otherwise, mechanically functions. These North-West Mounted Police issued Model 1876s are highly sought after!
