GENERAL CHARLES RINALDO FLOYD (GEORGIA, 1797-1845) MINIATURE MILITARY PAINTING, graphite and watercolor/gouache on paper, en grisaille, after The Duel by Richard Westall (1809), from Walter Scott's poem Marmion depicting knights Marmion and Ralph de Winton with their horses engaged in combat. Mounted to the original paper backing with rectangular ink-drawn fields framing it on the sheet, signed on the paper below the painting "by Genl. Floyd - Geora [for Georgia]". Unframed. Circa 1825. 3" x 2 1/2" painting, 11 1/2" x 8 3/4" backing paper.
Catalogue Note: Charles Floyd (American, October 14, 1797-March 22, 1845) was a noted duelist, soldier, and artist. He was the second son of General John Floyd, who commanded the 1st Division of the Georgia Militia. Charles joined the Marines in 1818, leaving in 1824 upon receiving an appointment as aide-de-camp to his father. He later distinguished himself in the Seminole Wars by leading the Trail of Tears out of Georgia and was an early settler of Florida. His papers are held by the Georgia Historical Society and the Marine Corps Museum owns his self-portrait drawn in 1825. While a number of Floyd's drawings have been recorded, only a few have been sold, two of which have been sold through our firm. See Jeffrey S. Evans & Associates, 11/20/2021, lot 3202; and 6/25/2022, lot 2062.
