BURMA RAILWAY P.O.W. RELIC
An interesting wooden statue made by a British prisoner of war in Burma, Fredrick Fox, depicting Captain A.G. Faber, a Japanese POW and forced laborer for the Burma Railway, as part of 'U Party' led by Lt. Col. S. Mackeller, based principally at Kanu/Kanyu. Faber was a successful businessman in Kuala Lumpur before the outbreak of hostilities, and then served as a soldier in Federated Malay States Volunteer Forces (FMSVF). His war experience is well-documented and a portion of his correspondence is housed in the Imperial War Museums. Faber was captured in Singapore in February 1942, then moved to Changi in late October 1942 for work on the Burma Railway until June 1943, when he was moved to Tarsao camp in a party of sick POWs (having contracted malaria and dysentery), onwards to Chungkai in October 1943 and Tamuang (May 1944). His captivity continued to January 1945 at Nakom Paton/Pathon camp, where he was liberated. Faber must have been a comrade of the statue's maker Fredrick Fox, who signs at the bottom of the base ‘Fredrick C. Fox', adding ‘Royal [?] 1942-1945 POW Burma'. Fox has carved around all four sides of the base: ‘Captain A. G. Faber Singapore 1942 / Changi Burma Thailand Railway / ‘U' Party Kanyu Thailand 4.D. Tars[a]o / Chungway Tamuang Nakum Paton'. Rich in carved detail and accented with stripes painted above the chest pocket, the statue shows a stolid Faber, hand in pocket. It stands 7 in. high and is crafted light wood, possibly paulownia or jelutong. A small piece has broken off from the brim of the captain's hat, else in very good to fine condition. From the decades-old collection of the owner of a small aviation museum in Britain.
