GEN. FRANZ HALDER'S MAP OF THE WITHDRAWAL FROM THE KUBAN BRIDGEHEAD
Important Russian campaign map from the personal files of German Gen. FRANZ HALDER (1884–1972), titled: 'Die taktische Raumung des Kuban-Bruckenkopfe' ('The tactical Evacuation of the Kuban Bridgehead'), 17 x 10.5 in. blueprint-type printed map certainly of war-date production, drawn on a scale of 1:300,000. The map, prepared after the Russian capture of the Kerch Strait, is divided into two parts, the left side depicting the situation from Sep. 15-24, 1943, the right side from Sep. 24 to Oct. 9, 1943. Geographic features include the Kuban Peninsula, Kerch Strait, and the Taman Peninsula, Novorossiysk, Temryuk, Kerch, Crimea, and Taman. German forces shown include 97.Jager-Division, 4. Gebirgs-Division, 50. Infanterie-Division, 370. Infanterie-Division, Gr. Becker, Gr. Babel, Gr. Sixt, etc. Also shown are routes of naval transport over the Kerch Strait to the Crimean Peninsula. Light folds and some toning due to the blueprint process, file holes at left, else fine. This map graphically documents the strategic withdrawal of Army Group A from the Kuban bridgehead in the face of the resolute Soviet advance. The evacuation sought to preserve the remaining German by transferring troops across the Kerch Strait to Crimea before the Red Army could encircle them. On Oct. 9, 1943 the Russian commander of the North Caucasian Front issued an order stating: 'Today...troops of the 56th Army with a swift attack broke the last resistance of the enemy and by 7.00 a.m. reached the shore of the Kerch Strait. Scattered remnants of the enemy were cut off from the ferry and killed. There is not a single living German, except for prisoners, at Kuban and Taman Peninsula. The last stage of the battle for the Caucasus, which began last fall on the Terek, near Novorossiysk, Tuapse, on the passes of the Great Caucasus Range - is over...'
