A charming vintage Russian hand-painted wooden Matryoshka (nesting) doll set comprised of five graduated figures, each decorated in vibrant traditional folk attire with colorful floral motifs and expressive hand-painted faces. The largest doll features a bright yellow headscarf and richly ornamented red floral apron, while the successive dolls are painted in complementary green, red, brown, and yellow colorways, each nesting neatly within the next. Matryoshka dolls have become enduring symbols of Russian folk art since their introduction in the late nineteenth century. Traditionally turned from seasoned wood and carefully hand-painted by artisans, each set represents themes of family, continuity, and craftsmanship. Every doll in the present set displays individually painted facial expressions and decorative floral borders characteristic of mid-20th century production intended for both domestic enjoyment and export.
