DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER'S GENERAL'S SHAEF PATCH, INSIGNIA, AND VISOR CAP BADGE
(1890 - 1969) 34th President of the United States, Supreme Commander of Allied forces in Europe during World War II and largely responsible for the successful invasion on D-Day. A fine presentation of historic insignia once belonging to Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower, includes a Navy Relief Fund Auction lot card, approx. 4.5 x 3.5 in., signed by Eisenhower in black ink, loosely mounted. The card describes lot 167, ‘Patches, Stars, Misc. Insignia', consisting of a pair of the general's five-star shoulder insignia, a gilt U.S. Army officer's cap badge, a pair of U.S. Army collar insignia, a single ‘U.S.' lapel insignia, a Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force (SHAEF) shoulder patch, and a U.S. Army European Command sleeve patch, all donated by Eisenhower for the benefit of the fund. The entirety is mounted, matted and displayed in a 26.25 x 18 in. frame, along with an 8/10 in. b/w photo of Eisenhower and an identifying plaque. The mat and mounts show water damage to the left side, otherwise in very good overall condition. The Navy Relief Fund auctions were a source of fund raising during and after World War II, conducted by the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, a private non-profit charitable organization sponsored by the Department of the Navy. The funds raised were used to help sailors and Marines, both at home and abroad, by offering financial assistance. Many celebrated leaders donated uniforms, insignia, flags and other personal effects to help the Relief society raise funds.
