Documented Captain Lucien M. Wiler Shipped and Factory Inscribed Colt New Army & Navy Model Double Action Revolver with Factory Letter The accompanying factory letter states this revolver was shipped on June 20, 1901, to Captain Lucien M. Wiler in the State of Pennsylvania, with "Lucien M. Wiler" factory inscribed on the backstrap, in .38 caliber with a 6 inch barrel, blue finish and type of grips not listed, as the sole gun of its type in the shipment. Lucien Moss Wiler (October 27, 1864-August 8, 1921) became captain of Company E of the Second Infantry Pennsylvania National Guard on June 4, 1896, and led his company to combat in the Spanish-American War. He was promoted to major in 1903, lieutenant colonel in 1910 and held the rank of colonel in 1915. During World War I, Colonel Wiler was commissioned as a major in the regular army and assigned to the 12th Brigade at the officers' training camp at Fort Niagara and would also serve at several other camps, being discharged at Camp Dix in March of 1919. The top of the barrel is marked with the standard two-line address and patent dates ending with "95", while the left has the caliber marking. The circled Rampant Colt is marked on the left rear of the frame. The serial number is marked on the butt, the matching assembly number "536" is marked on the cylinder latch, frame, crane, and correctly hand etched inside both grip panels, with non-matching number "503" along with "R.A.C." military inspector initials of Rinaldo A. Carr on the rear of the cylinder. It has the standard blade front sight, frame-top groove rear sight, and a pair of checkered hard rubber grips with Rampant Colts at the tops.
