Salvador Dalí (1904-1989), born in Figueres, Spain, was a pioneering Surrealist painter known for his striking, dreamlike imagery and flamboyant persona. Raised in Catalonia, Dalí studied at the San Fernando Academy of Fine Arts in Madrid and gained early recognition with a solo show in Barcelona in 1925 and inclusion in the 1928 Carnegie International Exhibition in Pittsburgh. He joined the Surrealists in Paris, where he met his lifelong muse and partner, Gala, and soon became a leading figure in the movement, producing iconic works such as The Persistence of Memory. Clashing with the Surrealists and eventually expelled, Dalí developed a “classic” period focused on science and religion. During World War II, he lived in the United States with Gala, gaining celebrity status and publishing his autobiography, before returning to Spain, where he continued to create, embracing Catholicism and exploring scientific themes. Despite later struggles with depression, drug addiction, and Parkinson’s disease, Dalí remained an influential and provocative figure until his death from heart failure in 1989.
