This lot comprises two antique hand-forged wrought iron fireplace or hearth tools, likely of American origin and dating from the late 18th to 19th century. The first item is a pair of long-handled ember or coal tongs featuring a hinged spherical or globular head. These tools were traditionally used to retrieve a single hot coal from a hearth fire to light tobacco pipes, candles, or lamps. The arms are square-sectioned and taper toward the handles, which terminate in small loops. The construction utilizes a simple smith-made pinned pivot. The second item is an adjustable pot trammel consisting of a long wrought iron rod with a hooked terminal and a series of heavy-gauge interlocking rings. Designed to hang from a pot crane or chimney bar, this tool allowed for the height adjustment of cooking pots over an open flame by hooking into different rings. Both items demonstrate typical colonial-style blacksmithing with hand-hammered surfaces and hand-turned rings. No maker's marks are visible on either piece. A modern paper auction tag is present on the trammel.
