Native American, Mississippian culture, ca. 1000–1500 CE. A full-bodied earthenware jar swelling from a narrow rounded base to broad shoulders before drawing inward to a short, gently flaring rim. The shell-tempered fabric, fired to a mottled buff and smoky gray, carries the fire clouds and surface pitting that mark open pit firing. Across the upper shoulder and neck, fine incised hatching fans out in overlapping arcs, a restrained decorative scheme set against the otherwise plain, hand-burnished body. Built by coiling and scraping rather than the wheel, the vessel was a workhorse of domestic life in the river valleys of the American Southeast and Midwest, used for storing grain or water and for cooking over the hearth. Its generous capacity and sturdy, rounded form speak to the settled agricultural communities of the Mississippian world. Size: 8.5" D x 10.8" H (21.6 cm D x 27.4 cm H).

The Mississippian culture (ca. 800 to 1600 CE) was a mound-building civilization centered on fertile river floodplains, with Cahokia near present-day St. Louis as its largest urban center. Shell tempering, crushed mussel shell mixed into the clay, is a diagnostic hallmark of the tradition: it allowed thinner, stronger walls and broad, capacious vessels suited to maize-based agriculture. Utility jars like this one, with constricted necks and flaring rims, were the everyday containers of the household, distinct from the elaborate effigy and engraved wares reserved for ritual and burial contexts.
