The Morgan dollar is a United States silver dollar minted from 1878 to 1904 and again in 1921. It was the first standard silver dollar produced following the Coinage Act of 1873 and contains 412.5 Troy grains of 90 percent silver (371.25 Troy grains or 0.7734 troy ounces of pure silver). Designed by United States Mint Assistant Engraver George T. Morgan, the obverse features a left facing profile of Liberty modeled by Anna Willess Williams, wearing a Phrygian cap adorned with wheat and cotton. Surrounding the portrait are the inscriptions E PLURIBUS UNUM, thirteen stars, and the date 1897. The reverse depicts an eagle with wings outstretched, clutching arrows and an olive branch, within a laurel wreath with the inscriptions UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, ONE DOLLAR, and IN GOD WE TRUST.
