Greco-Roman, ca. 1st century BCE to 2nd century CE. A finely modeled Greco-Roman pottery fragment representing the theatrical mask of a satyr, the half-human, half-animal companions of Dionysus. The broad face is expressive, with deeply incised eyes set beneath arched brows, a pronounced nose, and a wide open mouth suggestive of both laughter and mischief. Rounded ears flare outward, and the forehead bears a ridge that accentuates the furrowed, animated expression. The mask's features reflect the exaggerated physiognomy of satyrs in classical theater, where such masks allowed audiences to recognize character types from afar. In the Greco-Roman world, masks of satyrs were not only worn on stage but also reproduced in terracotta for domestic or votive use, serving as reminders of the god Dionysus and the revelry, fertility, and chaotic freedom his attendants embodied. Size: 3.1" L x 3.2" W x 2.6" H (7.9 cm x 8.1 cm x 6.6 cm); 5" H (12.7 cm) on included custom stand.
