Well-Documented Pre-Revolutionary War Reading Attributed Smoothbore Flintlock American Long Rifle This "smooth rifle" is gun No. 9 on page 66 of "Thoughts on the Kentucky Rifle in Its Golden Age" by Kindig in the chapter "Pre-Revolutionary Kentuckys with Brass Patch Boxes." It is described on page 59 as: "No. 9 has a lock plate that is very broad at the pan and tapered sharply to the rear. This differs from the more or less parallel top and bottom edges of most locks and is, I believe, an early detail somewhat reminiscent of the wheel lock. The muzzle cap is fastened by a screw - another unusual and early detail. I believe this gun was made near Reading." The octagonal barrel is equipped with dovetailed rifle style sight and is smoothbore. The lock has a roller on the frizzen spring and a grooved tail. The mounts are brass. The release for the two-piece patchbox is at the heel. The stock has molding terminating in a raised bulbous carving at the ramrod entry point accented by a spade shaped finial. The stock also features drop flats, similar drop shaped carving at the barrel tang, molding along the underside of the butt, and incised and raised relief carved scrollwork at the wrist and rear of the cheekpiece.
