Catalogue note:
In Windy Day, the artist Rockwell Kent transports the viewer into the windswept field alongside its subjects as they brace against the elements. But the reverse of the canvas tells a story of its own—one of artists, friendship, and the many hands through which this work has passed.
Visible on the reverse are ownership labels connecting the painting first to the painter Arthur E. Cederquist and later to the collector George S. Hellman. Most intriguing is a handwritten note on the stretcher bar that reads: "This painting by Rockwell Kent was given by him to me for having used my canvas for it. Arthur E. Cederquist."
The reverse also reveals traces of the canvas's earlier life. Mysteriously, the name"Bellows" appears to have been written in paint and crossed out, posing questions regarding who the original owner of this canvas may have been. (Both Kent and George Bellows studied at the New York School of Art under the painter Robert Henri; and both artists had studios in the Lincoln Arcade Building at 65th and Broadway).
Beyond the landscape itself, this piece preserves a record of its own history. It serves as a reminder that a painting is not only an image, but also an object that carries the marks of its makers, owners, and travels through time.
