    Other notes:
This work is a finished preparatory study for Couse's painting "The Lesson," 1923, oil on canvas, 50" H x 60" W, which was sold at Sotheby's New York, May 20, 1998, Lot 75.

Eanger Irving Couse, a founding member of the Taos Society of Artists, is known for his sensitive portrayals of Native American life in the American Southwest, particularly the Pueblo Indian community in Taos. "The Weaving Lesson" is the preparatory finished oil study for the larger 1923 painting "The Lesson." In the two similar compositions, Couse depicts a quiet educational moment in which a Navajo man shares his knowledge of weaving with a younger figure. The scene reflects the artist's admiration for Indigenous traditions, particularly notable in the fine details of dress, the traditional Navajo loom and related materials and the dynamic Navajo transitional textile - possibly a double saddle blanket - executed in brighter hues here than in the final, larger painting. The use of aniline dyes in the late 19th century and early 20th century allowed for more color to enter into textile weaving. Together these compositional details emphasize themes of learning and knowledge sharing, cultural continuity, and intergenerational connection.
  • Medium: Oil on canvasboard
  • Condition: Visual: Overall good appearance. Extremely fine craquelure in places visible only with a loupe.

Blacklight: The darker red pigments fluoresce under blacklight, but this appears to be in the hand of the artist.

    Frame: 17.25" H x 19.25" W x 2" D
