VERY FINE CHRISTIAN CO., KENTUCKY CHERRY STAND, the round top over a conforming veneered apron of unique laminated construction, the whole raised on high turned legs terminating in narrow tall spoke-like feet. Poplar substrate. Retains a stellar original surface with the base retaining a dark crackled finish and the top a light smoothed surface from years of cleaning. A partial note to the underside reads "80 yrs old / your Grandmother / Electa Fox". Attributed to James Coleman (1777-1851), Hopkinsville, KY. Circa 1830. 29" HOA, 20" D top.
Catalogue Note: James Coleman (1777-1851) was born in Virginia and recorded in Kentucky by 1800. The 1850 census records him as a wheelwright and engaged in "miscellaneous repair services". Richard Perrin briefly mentions Coleman in County of Christian, Kentucky: Historical and Biographical, saying on page 353, "... James O. and Lucy Coleman, came from Pennsylvania to Christian County, in the latter part of the eighteenth century. He was by trade a cabinetmaker, which he pursued in Hopkinsville for nearly half a century, and died in 1851..." Edna Talbott Whitney also records him in A Checklist of Kentucky Cabinetmakers from 1775-1859 as a wheelwright. The round laminated skirt construction and bold leg turnings of this table directly speak to the work of an experienced wheelwright, making the attribution to James Coleman very probable.
Electa Fox (1885-1958) is recorded as living in Hopkinsville, KY, with her husband, Frank, from around 1914 to 1918. It's unclear whether she is referring to herself as "your grandmother" or to an ancestor. Regardless, it places the table in the same town where it was made about "80 years" prior, as Electa notes.
