CHARLES TOWN, WEST VIRGINIA PAINT-DECORATED WOODEN FUNERAL HOME AND FURNITURE ADVERTISING TRADE SIGN, double-sided graphics, constructed of four panels joined by iron brackets and having a hanging loop at the top of each strap for hanging; retains an old painted surface, including some over-painting which is slightly visible to some panels and possibly done as a result of a business name change; panels comprising of the top panel marked "N. S. J. Strider & Son" and in an arch form with gray ground and dark lettering; second panel of arrow form with "Funeral Directors and Embalmers", blue ground with mustard yellow lettering; third panel of arrow form with "D. W. Ramey.", gray ground with dark lettering; and fourth panel of oval form and "Dealer In Furniture", blue ground with mustard yellow lettering. Retaining an early painted surface with some in-period alterations. Late 19th/early 20th century. 39" HOA, 77 5/8" LOA.
Catalogue Note: L. L. Sadler of Charles Town, WV first opened his small undertaking business in 1850, most notably handling the funeral of abolitionist John Brown who was hanged in the same town in December 1859.
Mr. Sadler sold the undertaking business in 1889 to N. S. J. Strider and D. W. Ramey, who moved it to W. Congress Street in Charles Town. Melvin Strider joined his father in 1918 and bought the D. W. Ramey interest in the partnership. In 1926, Melvin Strider purchased a three-story building and continued with undertaking in addition to dealing in furniture. The Strider Family funerary business is currently still in operation in Charles Town.

    Very good overall condition, expected usage wear and weather imperfections, wood having expected minor imperfections including flakes/roughness, several losses and some splits/separations, including a glued break to the top panel.
