'HARLEM HELLFIGHTERS' REGIMENTAL PHOTOGRAPH
Fabulous original photograph, an original image of the '15th N.Y. Infantry Camp Whitman 1917', the regiment soon redesignated as the 369th Infantry Regiment. Famous for their service in World War I, they earned the nickname 'Harlem Hellfighters' and spent 191 days on the front lines—longer than any other American unit of their size. This original 42.25 x 6.25 in. (sight) photograph shows the white officers and a small dog (the mascot!) at center, the regimental band at right, and hundreds of black troops seated in rows behind them. Tents, simple barracks, and automobiles appear in the background. Near fine, nicely matted and set into a black and gold wood frame. The Harlem Hellfighters would see grisly combat during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, which began on Sept. 26, 1918. As the 369th advanced, capturing towns and a key railroad junction, the losses mounted. In a matter of days, these advances cost the regiment 851 men, and shortly after they were relieved from the front lines. In recognition of their bravery during the offensive, 171 officers and men received medals and the entire regiment received the Croix de Guerre from France. Additionally, the regiment's famous band is credited with bringing jazz to England, France and Germany!
