SIR FRANCIS NICHOLSON (1655-1728) SIGNED 1704 MILITARY COMMISSION DOCUMENT, manuscript on paper, military commission for John Custis Jr. (1678-1749) to be major for the militia of Northampton Co., Virginia. Signed by Lieutenant Governor Sir Francis Nicholson and dated May 12, 1704, with pressed seal applied on left side. Professionally matted. Dated 1704. 14 1/2" x 6 1/4" object, 22" x 28" OA. 
Catalogue Note: (1) Sir Francis Nicholson served as Governor of Virginia from 1698 to 1705. (2) John Custis IV was married to Francis Parke in 1706, and they had one surviving son, Daniel Parke Custis. Their son would marry Martha Dandridge in May 1750, who would become a widow in July 1757 and later remarry George Washington in January 1759.

  • Condition:

    Paper is in very good condition with three vertical folds. There are three areas of loss near the top, which have been stabilized and do not affect any writing on the document. The label has two years for his death, it was March 5, 1727, in O.S. and March 16, 1728, in N.S.
