Highly Attractive New York Engraved Colt New Service Double Action Revolver in .38-40 W.C.F. with Pearl Grips and Factory Letter Manufactured in 1902, this is a highly attractive example of a Colt New Service revolver that was shipped to one of New York's premier retailers and engraved by an extremely talented New York artisan. The included factory letter lists this revolver in .38-40 caliber with a 5 1/2 inch barrel, blue finish, and grips not listed when shipped to Schoverling Daly & Gales in New York on 9 December 1902 as the only gun of its type in the shipment. It is noted in "The Book of Colt Firearms" by Wilson that fewer than 75 New Service Model revolvers were factory engraved, and these New York engraved examples are highly desirable among today's collectors. The revolver exhibits nearly full coverage, masterfully executed floral scroll engraving, very much in the style that Colt factory Master Engraver Cuno Helfricht's shop was producing at the time on these double action revolvers. It exhibits primarily deep cut floral scrollwork on beaded backgrounds with some gadrooned borders and a starburst pattern on the crane. The top of the barrel has the two-line address and patent dates, while the model and caliber marking is on the left side. The left side of the frame has the circular model marking around the Rampant Colt. It is fitted with a blade front sight, frame-top groove rear sight, lanyard swivel on the butt, and a highly attractive pair of smooth pearl grips, which were likely fitted by Schoverling Daly & Gales.
