A set of five mid-19th century white ironstone earthenware plates manufactured by the Staffordshire firm Mayer and Elliot. Each plate is designed with a paneled octagonal form and features a molded border decorated with repeating foliate scrolls and plumes in low relief. The glaze displays the characteristic slight blue-white tint associated with Victorian-era ironstone. The reverse of the plates bears an impressed mark for MAYER & ELLIOT, a firm active at the Dale Hall Works in Longport between 1858 and 1861. A black-printed British Registry diamond mark is also present, indicating the design was originally registered on November 13, 1845. Mayer and Elliot, as successors to T.J. and J. Mayer, utilized these registered molds during their period of operation.
