WILLIAM PERRY ENGRAVED WHALE'S TOOTH
Early 20th Century
Depicts a ship at sea. Signed on both sides "WP".

  • Provenance: Notes:
William Perry (1894-1965) was quite possibly the first "contemporary" scrimshander, working in the style of 19th Century whalemen to carve, engrave and build functional objects out of whale teeth and whalebone to sell in the retail marketplace. Perry was born in Oakland, California but spent the majority of his life in and around the whaling port of New Bedford.

He wanted to follow in the footsteps of his father, Frank Antone Perry, a New Bedford-born whaleman, but his Azorean mother forbade him from embarking on such a dangerous occupation.

His artistic talent was recognized when he was a teenager. He held a series of odd jobs over his lifetime, some of which aligned with his drawing skills, including cutting glass at the Pairpoint factory and working as a tattoo artist. He was also a watchman aboard the whaleship Charles W. Morgan, a cook, a gardener and a janitor.

He combined his love of whaling and art by scrimshanding in his free time, eventually engraving more than 1,000 pieces. He was able to sell many pieces through Albion Stone, who owned a jewelry and fine gift store in New Bedford, and William Kranzler, an antiques dealer with a shop across the street from the New Bedford Whaling Museum.

Perry's work is now included in the collections of the Nantucket Whaling Museum, Mystic Seaport Museum and the New Bedford Whaling Museum.
