Portrait of Jerome Petion de Villeneuve (1756–1794), French lawyer and politician who rose to considerable prominence during the French Revolution.

This 19th-century lithograph, based on an original by artist Henri Joseph Hesse, portrays Jerome Petion de Villeneuve (1756–1794), a French lawyer and politician who played a significant role in the French Revolution. He served as the second Mayor of Paris from 1791 to 1792 and was once a close ally of Robespierre before the two became rivals. Petion sided with the moderate Girondins against Robespierre's radical faction, and after the Girondins were forced from power in 1793, he went into hiding to avoid arrest. He died in June 1794, just weeks before Robespierre himself was overthrown. Unframed.
