Pair of Factory Engraved William Powell & Son Best Quality Sidelock Double Barrel Shotguns with Case -A) William Powell & Son Shotgun Pair of Factory Engraved William Powell & Son Best Quality Sidelock Double Barrel Shotguns with Case -A) William Powell & Son Shotgun Completed c. 1913. Both guns were built with blacked steel chopperlump barrels featuring a single bead sight on the smooth concave game rib with doll's head extension which is marked "WILLIAM POWELL & SON, 35 CARRS LANE, BIRMINGHAM." along with a gold inlaid "1" or "2" in a flourish of scrollwork, period Birmingham proof marks, and chambers marked 2 1/2 inches with South Gate ejectors. The barrels of each are fitted to a casehardened sidelock bar-action which displays expertly cut classic English bouquet and scroll engraving surrounding "WILLIAM POWELL & SON" on either lockplate and a gold "1" or "2" on the toplever. The guns both feature a third bite, intercepting sears, double triggers, and a tang mounted automatic safety with gold "SAFE". The guns are both fitted with a beautifully figured and multi-point checkered splinter forend with engraved casehardened iron and Anson button release marked with a gold "1" or "2" as well as a straight grip stock with teardrop carved drop points, a silver stock oval with a stag and griffin symbolizing the triumph of wisdom over aggression, and a leather covered recoil pad. Includes a period leather flat case with "F.H.G." on the lid relined in burgundy baize and containing two turnscrews, two oil bottles, and some cleaning tools. Barrel and stock measurements (R/L): bore diameter nine inches from the breech both proofed at "12" (.729 inches) and measured .735/.734 inches; choke constriction .011/.010 inches; minimum wall thickness .023/.025 inches; 1 1/2 inch drop at comb; 2 1/8 inch drop at heel; 14 11/16 inch length of pull; weight 6 lbs. 11 oz.

  • Condition: A) Very fine as professionally restored, retaining 98% black finish, traces of original case colors with the balance of the action a silver patina, and light handling evidence. There are tiny hairline cracks at the rear of the lockplates and upper tang; otherwise, the wood is also very fine with some light handling marks and crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent. The case exterior shows some wear and the interior is very fine. B) Very fine as professionally restored, retaining 97% black finish, traces of original case colors on the action with the balance a silver patina, light handling evidence, a few tiny faint pits, a tiny hairline crack at the upper tang, and crisp checkering on the stock and forend. Mechanically excellent.
