Desirable Smith & Wesson .357 Registered Magnum Double Action Revolver with Factory Letter Manufactured in 1939, this is a very fine example of the Smith & Wesson .357 Registered Magnum revolver. Due to the high cost of production because of their special ordered and hand-fitted nature, only approximately 5,500 of these Registered Magnums were produced before production was halted around 1939-1940. Roy Jinks notes in a 2010 article for the Smith & Wesson Collectors Association Journal that only 778 of these Registered Magnums were produced with a 6 inch barrel like this example. The included factory letter lists this revolver with registration no. 5306, a 6 inch barrel, a McGivern gold bead front sight on a plain ramp, square notch rear sight, blue finish, checkered walnut Magna grips, sighted at 25 yards with .357 Magnum ammunition for a 6 o'clock hold, and shipped to Dave Cook Sporting Goods Co. in Denver, Colorado, on 22 September 1939. The revolver has the standard Smith & Wesson markings, as well as matching serial numbers on the butt, rear face of the cylinder, in the ejector rod shroud, and stamped inside the right grip panel, matching assembly numbers on the frame and crane, and the registration number "5306" on the frame. It is fitted with a McGivern gold bead blade front sight, adjustable notch rear sight, and a pair of checkered walnut "Magna" grips with "S&W" monogram medallions at the tops.
