(POLITICAL CARTOON) PAT OLIPHANT
(b. July 1935) Australian-American political cartoonist whose career spans more than fifty years. His trademark is a small penguin character named 'Punk', who often comments upon the subject of the panel. The New York Times described Oliphant as 'the most influential editorial cartoonist now working'. Pulitzer Prize recipient, seven-time National Cartoonist Society Editorial Cartoon Award recipient. Signed original political cartoon by Oliphant, likely published, 17.5 x 11 in., 1983, shows an auto driver labeled 'ISRAEL' in rags dragging a steering wheel behind him. A sign above him indicates the direction to 'BEGINVILLE' (an obvious reference to Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin), the region resembling a hell on earth with storm clouds, lightning, chasms, skulls, etc. At bottom, Punk asks the car driver: 'How was the Promised Land?' to which the driver responds: 'Promises schmomises' A bit puckered at the bottom margin, else near fine. In 1983, Menachem Begin resigned as Prime Minister of Israel and withdrew from public life. His departure followed deep political fallout from the 1982 Lebanon War and severe personal grief caused by the death of his wife, Aliza. Begin's deterioration mirrored the erosion of the general Middle East situation. As he made his announcement, incipient civil war exploded in Beirut, shattering the last lingering illusions Israelis may have had that their invasion of June 1982 had opened a way to a stable, peaceful Lebanon. Shiite militias battled the Lebanese Army and peacekeeping troops were caught in shelling attacks that killed two American Marines and four French military personnel.
