Near East, Islamic, ca. 1800–1899 CE. Near East, Islamic period, ca. 19th century CE. A pair of slender ritual spoons, each pairing a small hemispherical bowl with a long tapering shaft and openwork at the junction. The larger is forged of iron, its bowl showing russet oxidation, the handle pierced into a lyre-like scroll above a baluster-knopped stem ending in a turned finial. Its smaller companion is gilt silver, the assay yielding 94.2% silver alloyed with copper and a trace of gold, its scrollwork lighter and more delicate, with gilding remaining in the bowl. Spoons of this scale rarely served the table; more likely they measured kohl, incense resins, medicinal powders, or unguents, in a devotional or apothecary context. Size of larger: 4.8" L x 0.6" W (12.2 cm L x 1.5 cm W); silver quality: 94.2%; weight of silver spoon: 3.2 grams

Provenance: private Essex, New York, USA collection
