J. EVANS
New Hampshire, Active 1820s-1850s
An extremely fine pair of portraits depicting the Thompson family of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, circa 1833:

mother Eliza Burt with daughter Caroline, and father Zara with daughter Elizabeth. Posed in matching interiors, with blue swagged and tasseled drapes and patterned floors. Eliza, with an elaborate up-do and fine suite of jewelry, is wearing white gloves and offering an apple to her daughter with one hand and holding a handkerchief in the other. Caroline holds in her hand a tiny bouquet of flowers, while Elizabeth holds a book. Zara is wearing a white glove on his left hand, which is holding the glove for his bare right hand, in which he holds his beaver fur top hat. Inscribed faintly in pencil on backboards "Eliza Burt Thompson wife of Zara Thompson and daughter Caroline born Christmas Day in 1831, died Portsmouth Sept. 26, 18[?]" and "Zara Thompson and wife Eliza Burt Thompson their eldest child Elizabeth Greenough Thompson born Sept. 22, 1826. Married James Morland and died in Chicago Jan. 8, 1916". Portsmouth city directories from the mid-1820s to the mid-1850s list Zara Thompson as a tailor and ready-made clothing merchant. He married Eliza Burt, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Burt, on March 26, 1826.

    Notes:
Virtually nothing is known about J. Evans -- even the artist's gender is a mystery. However, all works attributed to J. Evans are profile portraits such as this pair, painted in watercolor with no visible pencil drawing underneath, and all seem to depict residents around Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The faces of the sitters are consistent throughout Evans's career, with great attention to detail and subtle coloration. Only two signed examples are known.

Evans's work has often been confused with that of the far more prolific portraitist Joseph H. Davis. Their early work, from the early 1830s, is strikingly similar.
  • Dimensions: Watercolors on watermarked paper, 10.5" x 7.5" and 10.75" x 7.75" sight. Framed 13" x 10.5" and 14" x 10.75".
  • Condition: Remarkable state of preservation. Both with some slight toning to the paper, and a couple of tiny spots of foxing, most noticeable in the center of the gentleman's portrait. Zara and Elizabeth portrait possibly in original frame; other frame newer but with matching painted decoration. Not examined out of frames.

The absence of a condition report does not imply an object is free of defects.
