Desirable Smith & Wesson .357 Registered Magnum Double Action Revolver with Registration Certificate, Box, and Factory Letter Manufactured in 1938, this is a very fine example of the Smith & Wesson .357 Registered Magnum revolver. These revolvers were easily one of the highest quality handguns of their era but because of the high cost of production due to their special ordered and hand-fitted nature, only approximately 5,500 of these Registered Magnums were produced before production was halted around 1939-1940. Roy Jinks notes in a 2010 article for the Smith & Wesson Collectors Association Journal that only 1,439 of these Registered Magnums were produced with a 6 1/2 inch barrel like this example. The included factory letter lists this revolver with Reg. # 3477, a 6 1/2 inch barrel, blue finish, checkered wood grips, and shipped to George Worthington Co. in Cleveland, Ohio. An included reproduction of the registration certificate by Roy Jinks confirms the information in the factory letter as well as 3 1/2 lb. single action trigger pull, 10 lb. double action trigger pull, a McGivern front sight, deep "U" notch rear sight, and that it was sighted at 25 yards for a dead center hold with .357 Magnum ammunition. Also included are copies of the original order form, a George Worthington company invoice, and a Smith & Wesson invoice. The revolver has the standard Smith & Wesson markings, as well as matching serial numbers on the butt, rear face of the cylinder, in the ejector rod shroud, front face of the ejector star, back of the crane, and stamped inside the both grip panels. Matching assembly numbers are on the frame and crane, and the registration number on the crane. It is fitted with a McGivern gold bead blade front sight, an adjustable deep "U" notch rear sight, and a pair of checkered walnut magna grips with "S&W" medallions at the tops. Includes a correct factory box with label on the bottom hand-numbered with the matching serial number and registration number.

  • Condition: Exceptionally fine, retains 95% plus of the original blue finish and 97% of the original case colors on the hammer and trigger with some light muzzle and edge wear, scattered very light specks of surface oxidation, and a cylinder turn line. The grips are also exceptionally fine with a couple minor scratches on the butts and crisp checkering. Mechanically excellent. The well-worn box is fair with tears and tape repairs. An exceptional example of the highly revered Smith & Wesson Registered Magnum!
