PETER HENEBERGER, HARRISONBURG, SHENANDOAH VALLEY OF VIRGINIA ATTRIBUTED COIN SILVER CREAM LADLE, a round bowl on a fiddle handle with pointed shoulders and engraved "EJC" initials. Impressed to back with a maker's mark of "P H" in a serrated rectangular cartouche. Total weight: 0.500 ozt. Attributed to Peter Heneberger, Harrisonburg, VA (active c.1813-1869), who also worked in Chambersburg and Rapho, PA (1800-1810). First half 19th century. 5 1/2" LOA.
Literature: Hollan - Virginia Silversmiths, pp. 368-369, info on Peter Heneberger.
Catalogue Note: The mark on this present cream ladle is very similar to the one found on a teaspoon by Peter Heneberger with engraved "BMK" initials in the collection of Rocktown History in Dayton, VA, catalog no. 01.09.01. Though it is not recorded by Hollan, she mentions the Rockingham Historical Society (now Rocktown History) teaspoon in the notes for mark a, which is a misidentification for its actual mark. In the collection of Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library, there is a teaspoon with a similar "P H" mark in a serrated rectangular cartouche that is not currently attributed to a silversmith according to its catalogue entry, object no. 1974.0096.

  • Provenance:

From the collection of Ron & Kathy Napier, Front Royal, VA.

  • Condition:

Fair to good overall condition with some wear, moderate to heavier surface scratches and nicks, bending at medial of handle stem and a slight bend to handle end, bowl having a few dents.

Accepted Forms of Payment:

ACH, MasterCard, Money Order / Cashiers Check, Visa, Wire Transfer
