NAZI RACIAL THEORY: 'BEDOUINS OF THE DESERT AMONGST THEMSELVES'
Third Reich-era racial study, 'Semiten der Wuste unter sich' ('Bedouins of the Desert Amongst Themselves'), by Ludwig Ferdinand Clauss [Berlin: Buchergilde Gutenberg], 1937, 160pp. 4to., a study of the Arab and Bedouin peoples of the Middle East, illustrated with numerous photographs of individuals from the Semitic groups discussed. The publisher's translation on the inside of the dustjacket reads, in part: ‘…The author, already well-known to our members through his new work ‘Race and Soul'…examines the people and their ways of life from the standpoint of racial research and gives us, in both words and pictures, a profound insight into the customs and traditions…of those tribes that are today involved in the unrest of Palestine…'. Light wear to dust jacket, bumping to corners, overall good. One of the most influential racial theorists in the Third Reich, Ludwig Ferdinand Clauss (1892-1974) joined the NSDAP in 1933 and developed the 'physiognomic-mimetic' method, based on the assumption that both 'pure' and 'mixed breeds' have their own 'type-forming' expression. He is considered by many one of the 'fathers of Nazi racism'. Ironically, Clauss was expelled from the party in 1943 when it was discovered he had taken a Jewish student and assistant as a lover. He hid the woman from capture until after the war. Clauss was posthumously honored by the State of Israel as a 'righteous among the peoples' in 1979. After his entanglements became known, the honor was withdrawn in 1996.
