  • Provenance: ARTIST PROFILE: Antoni Clavé was a remarkably versatile Catalan artist whose creative output spanned painting, printmaking, sculpture, theatrical design, and collage. Born in Barcelona, he received his formal training at the School of Fine Arts under artists Angel Ferrant and Félix Mestres Borrel, while also taking evening courses at the Escuela de Artes y Oficios "Llotja" — a school that had also been attended by both Pablo Picasso and Joan Miró. After fighting for the Republican Army during the Spanish Civil War, Clavé arrived in France as a refugee in 1939 and settled in Paris, where he worked initially as an illustrator. In Paris, he was first influenced by the intimisme of Bonnard and Vuillard, though from the mid-1940s his painting grew increasingly expressive, with affinities to the rich and vibrant manner of Rouault. In the 1940s he met and befriended Picasso, a meeting that significantly altered the trajectory of his work. By the late 1950s he had begun producing the works for which he is best known — lyrical abstractions featuring paint over damask tapestry collages — and in the 1960s he expanded into metal sculpture, creating plaques and free-standing abstract compositions. Beyond the canvas, Clavé was a distinguished theatrical designer, creating sets for opera and ballet, and was nominated for two Academy Awards — Best Art Direction and Best Costume Design — for his work on the 1952 film *Hans Christian Andersen*. His work is held in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art in Paris, the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, the British Museum in London, and the Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo, among many others. He passed away in Saint-Tropez on August 31, 2005, leaving behind a legacy as one of Spain's most celebrated and wide-ranging artistic voices of the twentieth century.
