Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Javanese, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A group of four ivory hilts (hulu) for the kris, the wavy-bladed dagger central to Javanese and wider Indonesian material culture. Each grip is carved in low relief with foliate scrollwork, figures, and interlacing motifs, likely Durga or wayang-derived iconography that lends the weapon its talismanic charge. Each hilt is mounted on a carved hardwood stand. Size of largest: 1.6" W x 3.5" H x 2" D (4.1 cm W x 8.9 cm H x 5.1 cm D).

This item is made of or contains elephant ivory and is classified under the ESA (Endangered Species Act) as an exempt piece.   • Condition: All have a yellow patina, and stable striations. Smallest has stable pressure fissures, and a bone insert added to the tang hole, and a small chip to carving. Mounted on removable wood stands.
