Publisher: Alfred Osborn Pope (A.O.P.) Nicholson was a prominent public printer in Washington, D.C., tasked with producing the massive run ordered by the House. Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan is the official US government account documenting Commodore Matthew C. Perry's historic 1852–1854 naval expedition. Published in 1856, the text was compiled by historian and theologian Francis L. Hawks under Perry's direct supervision. It is widely recognized as a foundational English-language record detailing the end of Japan's 220-year period of isolation. 537 pages of text.
