WINCHESTER, SHENANDOAH VALLEY OF VIRGINIA, AFRICAN-AMERICAN LADY SIXTH-PLATE TINTYPE PHOTOGRAPH, a bust-length depiction of a well-dressed woman of African-American descent, she wears a stylish dress, choker, and large drop earrings. Housed in the original paper frame with a label verso reading "James McKericher / PHOTOGRAPHER, / 98 MAIN STREET, / WINCHESTER, VA." Circa 1870. 2 1/4" x 1 5/8" sight, 4" x 2 1/2" OA.
Catalogue Note: James Neil McKericher (1840-1913) immigrated to America from Scotland in either 1859 or 1865 settling in Winchester, Virginia where he married local resident Ann Virginia Affleck in 1866. His early years were spent in Winchester working as a photographer at his Main (Loudoun) St. studio, but by 1880 his residence is listed as Battletown (now Berryville) in neighboring Clarke Co., VA. In 1913 McKericher dies in Washington DC, where he'd been living since at least 1900, but he was returned to be interred in Winchester's Mount Hebron Cemetery. Several of his photographs are in the collection of the Winchester-Frederick County Historical Society, accession numbers: 69-1625, 69-1627, 166-06.
The identity of the sitter is sadly still unknown, but there were a number of prosperous Black families in Winchester around 1870. One of the most notable was the Evans family who owned and operated the public transportation system for the city, and it's possible that this lady is related to this rather large family. Later generations would operate the Evans Hotel, a long-running African-American hotel through several decades of the 20th century.

  • Condition:

Very good overall condition with minute wear to the tintype itself with typical very minor bubbling to the surface in a couple of isolated areas at the edges; some losses to the surface of the tintype are visible under the edges of the paper frame; the paper frame with typical staining from the light rusting on the edges of the tintype.
