RAYMOND A. SPRUANCE'S SHOULDER BOARDS AND COLLAR STARS
(1886 - 1969) American Navy admiral who commanded U.S. naval forces at both the Battle of Midway and the Battle of the Philippine Sea. A fine presentation of signed items and relics, includes two Navy Relief Fund Auction lot cards, each approx. 4.5 x 3.5 in., both signed by Spruance in blue ink, and both loosely mounted. The first card, for lot 69, describes a set of four-star admiral's shoulder boards and collar star insignia, while the second, for lot 903, describes a second set of two-star admiral's star insignia. All six pieces of insignia attributed to Spruance are presented alongside the respective lot cards, the entirety mounted, matted and displayed in a 23.75 x 17 in. frame, along with a period 8 x 10 b/w photo of Spruance and identifying plaque. The photograph and mat show water damage to the left side, otherwise in very good overall condition. The Navy Relief Fund auctions were a source of fund raising during and after WWII, conducted by the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society, a private non-profit charitable organization sponsored by the Department of the Navy. The funds raised were used to help sailors and marines, both at home and abroad, by offering financial assistance. Many celebrated WWII leaders donated uniforms, insignia, flags and other personal effects to help the Relief society raise funds.
