SS VEHICLE PENNANT
A very rare Allgemeine-SS vehicle pennant, unit marked for the III Sturmbann 83 SS-Standarte 'Oberhessen', an administrative regiment of the Allgemeine-SS which was headquartered in Gissen, Germany. A typical Allgemeine SS-Standarte was a regimental sized unit consisting of up to 3,000 men. The pennant, 16.25 in. long x 10 in. high, is constructed of a base material of woven white cotton, with an added 1.25 in. wide border of black ribbed rayon on all three sides, with the center of the white panel adorned with a machine woven and highly detailed bullion 'Bevo' SS-eagle patch, intricately machine-sewn to the pennant, also displaying the unit marking 'III/83', which is machine embroidered to the white field in black, and as can be viewed internally, was embroidered through a white cotton backing for support. Bottom right shows a small woven RZM tag sewn in place at one end, with the round RZM logo on left, followed by the maker and year number designation of 'St 225/36', and a round SS logo completing the tag. This pennant was originally constructed in two halves, with front and back being constructed separately, and then having been sewn together. Lacking any evidence of attachment points or hardware, this pennant was likely encased in a celluloid protective cover, as usually encountered on a variety of cloth vehicle pennants of the period. This example has had the central design portion of the backside roughly cut out, probably removing another embroidered eagle and unit designation, leaving only the outside hem and the black rayon border intact on this side. Additionally, there is some minor mothing to the white base material, mostly to the margin outside the black borders. Overall good condition. Tests negatively to UV light.
