Will Barnet (1911-2012) American, "Soliloquy" Artist's Proof Screenprint. Depicts a robed woman resting on a Persian rug with a black cat by her side. Signed in pencil bottom right. "Artist's Proof" written in pencil bottom middle. Title written in pencil bottom left. Label on back from Lantern Gallery.

Will Barnet was born in Beverly, Massachusetts in 1911 and studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Art Students League of New York under Stuart Davis and Charles Locke, where he also became the League’s official printer in 1936. Barnet taught at many institutions including the Art Students League, Cooper Union, Yale University, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, mentoring generations of artists such as James Rosenquist, Cy Twombly, Audrey Flack, and Lois Dodd. Represented by the Bertha Schaefer Gallery from the 1950s onward, his work earned wide recognition, with pieces held in major collections including the National Gallery of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. Barnet received numerous accolades, including the first Artist’s Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Academy of Design, the College Art Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award, the Lippincott Prize, the Childe Hassam Prize, and the 2011 National Medal of Arts presented by President Barack Obama. He passed away in New York City in 2012 at the age of 101.
