CATALOGUE NOTE: Richard Anuszkiewicz was known as one of the leading figures of the Op Art (Optical Art) movement of the 1960s and 1970s. His first formal artistic training began at the Cleveland Institute of Art, where he studied from 1948–1953. He then attended the Yale University School of Art, studying under the celebrated artist Josef Albers; and graduating with his Master of Fine Arts in 1955.

Anuszkiewicz was introduced to color theory and the relationships between formal structure and complementary colors through his mentor Josef Albers (Albers experimented with color juxtapositions most notably through his "Homage to the Square" series). Anuszkiewicz grew interested in investigating the optical effects that occur when high-intensity colors were applied to similar geometric configurations.

Along with Victor Vasarely in France, Bridget Riley in England, and Julian Stanczak in the United States, Richard Anusziekiwicz was among the most important international purveyors of Op Art. In 1964, Life Magazine called Anuszkiewicz "one of the new wizards of Op." ("Op Art," Life Magazine, December 11, 1964: p. 132). The artist was included in the revolutionary 1965 exhibition, The Responsive Eye, at the Museum of Modern Art. It was the first survey of the Op Art movement and traveled the country introducing the art phenomenon to the U.S. Public.
